CORONAVIRUS UPDATE FROM PASTOR HOWELL
REGARDING SUNDAY WORSHIP ON MARCH 22 AND MARCH 29

March 18, 2020 (12:45 p.m. MDT)

Dear FBC Family,

As you are aware, President Trump and the Coronavirus Task Force on Monday issued new guidelines for all Americans to follow to slow the spread of the Coronavirus. As I shared on Monday, FBC Carlsbad was suspending all weekday activities, including Wednesday night activities, Ladies’ Bible study, Reflections Senior Adult Choir, and other planned meetings/events, through Saturday, April 4.

After prayerful consideration and consultation with FBC’s Deacons last night, we have made the difficult, but necessary, decision to cancel on-site worship services on Sundays, March 22 and March 29. Although this was not an easy recommendation to make, the Pastoral Staff and the Deacon Fellowship were in full agreement that canceling on-site worship services for the next two weeks is the wisest course of action to take given the best available evidence that we have during these unprecedented times.

We hope and pray that we will be able to resume on-site worship on Palm Sunday, April 5. Until that time, we will provide worship online via Facebook Live at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, March 22 and Sunday, March 29. To access the live stream, you can log into your Facebook and go to FBC’s Facebook page, which is www.facebook.com/FirstBaptistCarlsbad. If you already have a Facebook account, but have not “liked” FBC Carlsbad’s Facebook page, I would encourage you to do so as it will make it easier to access the live stream and other content and resources that we will publish in the weeks ahead. For those who have “liked” FBC’s Facebook Page, we will send out notifications prior to online worship going live inviting you to join us.

For those who do not have Facebook, but who have access to the internet, a video of the worship services (including from this past Sunday, March 15) will be available on FBC’s website by Tuesday of each week. Just go to www.fbccarlsbad.org and click on the link for “Online Worship.” The link will take you to the church’s YouTube channel where you can easily access the worship services/sermons by date.

During the next two weeks, we will also be making available Sunday School/Bible study lessons taught by some of FBC’s well-known and respected Bible teachers. The first lesson, taught by Tom Lewis, will be available this weekend on both Facebook and the Website. These lessons can be accessed at any time and we would encourage families to watch together.

Garry, Kevin, and I will also be sharing online devotions via Facebook and our Website during the next two weeks while we are not able to meet together as a church family. I don’t believe that is an accident or coincidence that I have been preaching about how FBC Carlsbad can be a church that “Connects All Generations to God, One Another, Carlsbad, and the World.” Little did any of us know that staying connected to one another – even through the use of technology and social media – would be more important than ever before.

As a multi-generational church, one of the ways that we want to stay connected is through our ministry and outreach to our Senior Adults. Senior Adults, particularly those over 70, have been encouraged to stay at home for the next two weeks. That presents challenges to obtain groceries, medicine, and other necessities. The Pastoral Staff and Deacon Fellowship want to assist our Senior Adults during this challenging time.

If you need groceries, medicine, or other essential items and do not want to leave your home, we are available to pick up what you need and deliver it to you. You can call the church office at 575-887-1158 or the Pastoral Staff and Chairman of the Deacons at the following contact numbers:

Pastor Howell – (575) 921-7670
Pastor Garry – (575) 973-1020
Pastor Kevin – (575) 200-6561
Chairman of Deacons Doug Burt – (575) 302-4866

We are also aware that Carlsbad is experiencing a shortage of supplies (toilet paper, paper products, cleaning supplies, some food, etc.). While we hope that the local stores’ inventory will normalize in the next few days, we have ordered food and supplies to help church families during this time of transition. Food and supplies will be available at the church (or for delivery to our Senior Adults who may not want to leave home) beginning next Tuesday or Wednesday.

Because of the economic disruptions that the Coronavirus has caused within our nation, community, and church, we are aware that many of our church families will experience financial difficulties and hardships in the weeks and months ahead. We do have benevolent funds available to help for emergency situations and times of crisis. This is certainly one of those times. As a church family, we want to continue to trust God, not only with our own personal finances, but with the finances of our church. Many of you have asked how you might continue to worship through your tithes and offerings during this time of online worship. There are three ways that you can give:

  1. Online Giving – For many, this will be the easiest and safest way to give. FBC’s online giving is completely secure and safe. You can go to our website at www.fbccarlsbad.org and click on the link for “Online Giving” at the top right. You will be taken to our Online Giving page which explains the ways in which you can give (automatic withdrawal from a Checking/Savings Account or Credit/Debit Card transaction). Click on the “GIVE ONLINE click here” button and you will be taken to the Online Giving Portal. You will be designate the amount of your gift and the frequency (one-time or recurring) and indicate how much you would like to contribute among the following four funds:
    ◼ Budget (General Offering/Tithe)
◼ Annie Armstrong (Easter Offering for North American Missions)
◼ Building Fund (for building improvements/new construction)
◼ Benevolence (to help with emergency/crisis needs)

Then click “continue” and you will be taken to the next page to fill in your donation information. You do not have to have an online account, but you will be asked if you want to create one if you like. That will securely and safely save your information for future online giving. Once you have filled out the donation information, click on “process” and you will receive confirmation that your online giving has been successfully processed. If you have any questions about setting up online giving, please do not hesitate to contact FBC’s Financial Ministry Assistant Susie Kemp at (575) 887-1158.

        2. By Mail – You can always mail-in your contributions to the following address:
            First Baptist Church
            112 N. Alameda Street
            Carlsbad, NM 88220

If using a check, please make payable to: First Baptist Church Carlsbad or FBC Carlsbad

3. In Person – You can drop off your financial contributions by stopping by the FBC offices MondayFriday from 8:30 – 5:00          p.m. During the next two weeks, we plan on being open, but if you are uncomfortable coming inside the office, we can              meet you outside.

We will continue to provide regular updates to our FBC Family throughout the next two weeks. Even as circumstances change daily, we know that we worship and serve a great God who never changes. His faithfulness, goodness, and love are the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Although our spiritual enemy seeks to “steal, kill, and destroy,” Jesus promises that He has come that we might have an abundant, joy-filled life. We can have joy today, even during times of crisis, because He lives:

Because He lives,I can face tomorrow
Because He lives, all fear is gone
Because I know He holds the future
And life is worth the living, just because He lives

“Now to him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us—to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21)

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Howell
